Watering Hints and Tips
• To check if you have had the sprinkler on for long enough
- put an old jam jar in the area you are watering. When there is
1 inch/2.5cm in the jar you can move the sprinkler. (LD)
• To water dried out pot plants - plung
soak them. To do this fill a bucket with water and immerse the plant
holding it under the water level. Keep it there until the bubble
stop rising. (LD)
• Keep a full watering can in the greenhouse
so that when you water the greenhouse plants growth will not be
checked from the shock of cold water. (CB)
• If hanging baskets,
large pot plants and boxes have dried out try this - punch holes
in empty yoghurt cartons, place them on the compost and fill with
water. The slowly seeping water will gradually moisten the compost
and will be more effective than pouring on a can full at once which
will probably just flow through without the wetting effect. (LD)
•
Tip ice cubes into hanging baskets and containers in hot weather
- this releases the water slowly and none is wasted through the
bottom of the pot. (GW)
•
For watering new plants on a slope - sink the bottom half of a plastic
bottle at the side of the plant. Keep the bottle topped up with
water until the plant is established. This will ensure the plant
gets all the water instead of it running down the slope. (GA)
